REST IN POWER MIKY!! 

It’s with a heavy heart and an even heavier hand that I put my pen to the paper to write words we couldn’t even imagine three days ago, our good friend, our longest lasting colleague and devoted shop manager, The Howling Mad Dog better known as Miky or @unclerunswithscissors has moved on to become the manager up there or down below and no matter where he went, I really like to believe he’s already scaring the shiet out of angels or demons alike, explaining whatever god or devil thought was running things what they’ve been doing wrong for the last millennia…

Goddamned Miky… This one HURTS SO BAD!!

You leave us lost and heartbroken, you could be a real harda$$, without a doubt the grumpiest of us all but we all knew that inside that beast of a body or body of a beast a tiny heart of the purest gold was ticking for each and everyone of us and we could always, ALWAYS trust you were there for us and even though I’m writing this as “owner of the shop” I hear the voices of of everybody who ever worked with you, took a class with you or simply was a friend in the back of my head telling me the right words if they ever existed.

We’re gonna miss you, you brilliant, talented ba$$tard, your loyalty to the shop, your loyalty to the team, your loyalty to your patrons but above all your cast iron, unapologetic loyalty to yourself…

Your life was wayyy too short but you lived it twice as hard as so many others and in your given time you have inspired so, SO MANY and we can never thank you enough…

You might have left an impressive body but your spirit will never die my old friend, I, and I think everybody who’s life you touched with me, hereby solemnly swear you’ll live forever as we’ll keep talking, laughing, reminiscing, toasting, smoking and maybe shed an occasional tear about you!!

Wherever you are, light a fat one, kick some demon ass, see you soon bud we fckn’ love you.

The first time you cut my hair, I showed you a photo and said, “This is what I want.” You looked at it and said, “I’m not gonna do that.” I was taken aback—until you added, “Because I’m going to make it look good.” And you did. From that day on, I never let anyone else touch my hair. You just got it—every time. When we met for the last time, just a few weeks ago, I stood up from your chair and went in for our usual fist bump. You looked at me and said, “I made it look good.” You had never said that before. You always wished me a nice weekend, made a quick joke, or just nodded. But this time, you said it. And only later, when I heard of your passing, I understood the weight of those words. You really had made it look good, all those years. Thank you for the laughs, the warmth, and the jokes about having nightmares from my hair. I miss you. Rest in peace, Miky! 🙏

Ma mijn eerste afspraak bij schorem. Na afloop wilde ik nog een pot reuzel kopen. Tijdens het afrekenen gaf het pinautomaat "geen saldo" aan. Schaamde me kapot. De eerste keer dat ik je zag kwam jij tegenover mij zitten in de metro, dat is zeker 20+ jaar geleden. We hadden ineens een heel gaaf gesprek wat alle kanten op schoot Lang je vaste klant geweest op brakke zondag voor de geitenkaassalade en een kop thee bij het Westerpaviljoen. Altijd stond de thee warm als ik vanuit me nachtdienst langs je huis liep. Voor verhuis tips en spierballen verhalen was ik bij jou aan het goede adres. Nog nooit iemand meegemaakt die zo onbevreesd en sterk was. Als jouw mattie hoefde je nooit bang te zijn. Samen uitgaan, jonko's klappen op je kamer, snakebite in t podium en drum n base met de hoekselijn. Verschillende kraakfeestjes en kraakpanden met je bezocht. Bij de avondwinkel achteraan PwG en later aan het einde bij de Rotterdamse dijk. Mooie momenten met je meegemaakt, we mochten elkaar. Alleen als jij iemand niet mocht dan had ie een probleem. Je ben altijd goed voor me geweest ouwe mattie, Ik zal je herinneren als 1 van de meest kleurrijke figuren uit mn jeugd. 'Welkom in Schiedam'. Peace, J.E.F._knowledge. R.I.P.

It’s Saturday again and my early appointment is scheduled. My barber is preparing downstairs so I turn to Miky. ‘Miky, do you have a trashcan for my chewing gum? Ask your own barber! Those aware burst out in laughter. Only once have I had the pleasure of sitting in your chair, which was recently in March. My regular barber was not available but you were willing to help me out just prior to my vacation. ‘Can I do for you man?’ Well, you seem to be good with somewhat finer hair. Thin hair. Yes. About 75 percent of my regular customers consist of guys with thin hair. Look, those guys with perfect hair that you can do all kinds of things with are already looking handsome when they walk in, and they are still handsome when they walk out. Let the other guys do that and let them take their perfect pictures. The challenge for me is to let you leave more handsome than you were when you walked in. You see, I’m just a craftsman and I actually like beards more. But I can sell a lot of products to my clients with thin hair, haha! In about 45 minutes we talked about the shop, your role as a manager, as well as just other basic stuff like gaming. You told me you liked playing video games. Only real games, no fucking Fortnite or anything. ‘But Call of Duty.. I’ll destroy you motherfucker!’ I was like damn, easy bro. I’ll take your word for it. Miky, it’s a great loss man. If only my hair was as strong as your aura. When I’m heading to the shop later this month I'll undoubtedly still be able to feel it. And for those wondering if I actually walked out looking more handsome that one day in March? Pff.. get the fuck out.

Eén keer het genoegen gehad om geknipt te worden door Miky, het resultaat was verbluffend!! Maar dat was niet het enigen wat me bij bleef. Bij het afrekenen vroeg hij of ik nog producten nodig had van Reuzel waarop ik zei nee ik heb al zat, hij zegt mooi gauw betalen en opdonderen dan 🤣 Triest om te lezen dat je zo vroeg bent gegaan, en een flinke aderlating voor Schorem/ Reuzel! Ik wens alle nabestaanden veel sterkte!

El hefe van de shop, soms het hoogste woord, soms wat stiller maar altijd in controle en goudeerlijk Je was m’n vaste barbier de afgelopen jaren, je was goed in je werk, dat absoluut. Maar veel belangrijker is hoe je als persoon was: Gesprekken over het leven, over van alles of juist even niets. Een paar maanden terug was ik nog bij je in de stoel, doe maar lekker kort Miky Rasorfade en als het nog lukt pompadour kuifje met dat peentjes haar van mij. Miky grapt gelijk door de zaak: Ja dat is meestal he met een razorfade dat het kort gaat worden. En dan zit ik hier by Rafael (Moustage Gentlemen barbers) in Barcelona jullie FB te bekijken,lezen we ineens dat Miky niet meer is godver gozer veel te jong. Maar zoals Bertus en Leen al bevestigen je hebt het twee keer zo hard geleeft als vele. Ik ga je verschrikkelijk missen de volgende keer dat ik langs kom. Ondanks dat Rafael je niet persoonlijk kon, heeft ie toch een foto van je gedownload en die komt daar naast de Schorem Signature cuts posters aan de muur. Net als vele andere Schorem Memorabilia. Zo zie je maar je hebt zelfs een indruk achter gelaten bij mensen die je niet persoonlijk kennen. En dat zegt toch echt verschrikkelijk veel. Doe Essie en Dixie de groeten waar hun en jij ook zijn.

We hielden min of meer de ouderwetse rivaliteit in stand, jij de Schiedammer, ik de Vlaardinger. Dus waren daar de brulpartijen als ik binnenkwam, (O, nee, toch! Hebben we alles gehad…’), de optrekkende wenkbrauw, de norse blik. Een paar maanden geleden hadden we onverwacht voor de deur van Schorem een serieus gesprek, ongewoon voor hoe je mij doorgaans ontving bij, maar de aanleiding toen was mijn broze gezondheid. Jij vertelde daarop jouw verhaal dat elk denkbaar gruwelscenario overtrof. Kennelijk zat er achter dat immense exterieur en die woeste kop een kwetsbare jongen. Altijd al geweten, trouwens, dat Schiedammers nogal soft zijn, maar dat zei ik toen niet. We namen al snel weer onze vaste rollen aan. Je was dankbaar dat je er nog was, zei je. En ook: ‘Goed, nu nog zien of ik m’n pensioen haal.’ Daarna een knipoog. Niet veel later vulde je de zaak weer met je brulstem, en wist iedereen weer dat je binnen was. Je was veel, Mikey. Heel veel. Misschien voor sommigen zelfs te veel. Maar je was vooral het weerbarstige, woeste, kloppende hart van Schorem. Ga met God, en scheer wat hoofden daar, als je er toch bent.

Al die jaren wanneer ik in je stoel zat kon ik tot rust komen, wetende dat het resultaat altijd uitmuntend zou zijn, van haar tot baard tot in de puntjes verzorgd. The usual banter was happening, when suddenly he put his hand against my chin as a cup in front of my mouth. He waited, I waited not knowing what the hell he was doing. Suddenly his head appeared over my shoulder and commanded: “Spit.”. Me: “uh…”, him: “Spit out your gum.”. I did. He threw it away, promptly yanked my head straight, proudly and sternly said: “I’m a barber. I cut men’s hair. I am not a goat shearer, I don’t cut goats. Especially not chewing goats. Unless.. you want to look like a goat?”. I walked out that day with the cleanest cut ever.

Ongelooflijk wat triest. Tijdens mijn weken weken in de opleiding kwam Uncle runs with scissors af en toe met veel lawaai binnen vallen, dan kwam er ook ècht iemand binnen. Hij wees me wel eens op mijn houding tijdens t scheren, dan zei ik hem dat ik toch al in de 50 was en niet meer zolang hoefde te werken,... nu houdt het voor Miky al op na 38 jaar, ik wens iedereen heel veel sterkte met het verlies van deze persoonlijkheid 🖤

Ik heb (als zovelen) bij jou in je stoel mogen zitten om mij te laten knippen en scheren. We hebben niet veel gepraat omdat ik niet zo een prater ben. Maar je gaf mij wel het gevoel dat ik er mocht zijn. Normaal wanneer ik naar schorem ga (zei ik tegen de Barber) ik geef je de vrije hand. Doe maar wat je denkt wat goed is en laat mij verassen. Dat accepteerde Miky wel bij het knippen van mijn haar op mijn hoofd maar toen mijn baard aan de beurt was stond Miky erop dat ik mijn mening gaf hoe ik het wilde hebben en eerder ging de schaar er niet in. Voor het eerst gaf ik mijn mening bij Schorem hoe ik iets wilde hebben. En als resultaat kreeg ik een schitterend ringbaard. Dat gaf mij zoveel vertrouwen dat ik de volgende afspraak (met een andere Barber) met een eisen pakket hoe ik mijn haar en baard wilde hebben. En voor het eerst durfde ik ook een lang gesprek aan te gaan. Miky, Dank je wel dat jij mij in mijn kracht heb gezet. Zorg er voor (waar je geest nu is) dat je iedereen in hun kracht zet (want dat deed je op aarde ook). Rest in peace Miky😥😥😥😥

Visiting Rotterdam for the first time because one of my closest friends taking the 2 day course of schorem school and i was outside of the barber shop trying some videos of my friend, Miky was enjoying his cigarette outside, chilling and so friendly without knowing us at all let us in to take some clips of the shop and my friend for the memories. It was a dream of mine to visit this specific place for a long time and meet actually the legends of the place and how welcoming they are i was so wow for the whole time and experience! It was very special to meet him even just for one time but I can not wait to visit the barbershop again!!

Dear Miky, way to early my friend, we weren't finished yet..... although we knew each other for so long, we took time to talk about everything, and yes you had your character so do I, but the safe space created between us made everything discussable on our own typical Rotterdam......aah yes 'Schiedam' style, whilst doing my hair and or beard cut. Vorige week maandag was ik nog bij je thuis. We hadden in al die jaren bij jou in je stoel een klik opgebouwd. Iedere 3 weken, vanuit mijn kant startende als underdog (want je was een zeer ruwe diamant), naar een relatie waarin wij alles met elkaar deelde. Lief en leed, op persoonlijk – en zakelijk vlak. Verleden, heden en toekomst. Levenservaring, of juist helemaal niet, was nodig om het bij jou vol te houden. Beide kampen wisten wel al snel 1 ding: je was als kapper onevenaarbaar. Ik kwam nog veel verder met jou, want we waren samen zelfs onderweg naar een andere relatie: zakelijk en bovenal privé. Miky, gozer, ik ben echt helemaal kapot hiervan. Mijn verdriet doet er niet toe, want jij verdiende nog zoveel meer. Ik had je vader kunnen zijn en zo voelt het nu ook qua emotie. In onze relatie was echter een vorm van gelijkwaardige vriendschap aan het ontstaan, ongeacht leeftijdsverschil, en die ga ik enorm missen. Ik heb je leren kennen in het Westerpaviljoen, nog voordat je naar de opleiding van Schorem ging. De laatste keer dat ik een afspraak bij je had in Schorem, was het eerste wat je zei – of eigenlijk zong –: “Vandaag gaat Bas z’n staart eraf!” Dat is uiteindelijk niet gebeurd, haha. GVD! Veel te vroeg en alles, noem de clichés maar op. Satan heeft een mooi plekje voor je geserveerd, je mag z’n sik verzorgen denk ik zo. Het was altijd mooi op de fuifjes (Scumbash, Paaspop, Pinkpop) als jij biertjes en Lemmy’s kwam uitdelen tijdens het wachten. Je hebt mij maar 1x geknipt en geschoren maar dat was sowieso vakwerk. I see Miky every 3 weeks. He cut my hair in the first week I moved to this country, and the routine continued until two weeks ago - the last hair cut I had from him…. To me he has been more than a barber but a friend. Sitting on his chair having his company has become part of my life living in the Netherlands and I loved it! I am still in deep shock that he has gone, and spent the last hour letting my tears out. This makes me realise that Miky matters A LOT to me. This hurts SO BAD! Miky my friend, I’m gonna miss you a lot & I hope life will treat you better on the other side cuz you deserve it! Rest in peace big man!

I was intimated by him at first and thought he was going to tear into me like Simon Cowell on American Idol but he was patient, supportive and offered some of the best guidance I have ever received in my career as a barber and educator. I was there to take a class at ”The Old School”. Filming into the Holy Ashtray. You were cutting and saying nothing and just in the Zone. I called out, Miky! You looked up and without hesitation, flipped me off. It was perfect! The next morning upon shop opening, we met and talked and you gave me the first business card from the new ones you had just opened up. Its still in the frame with my Old School Certificate. Small moment but you translated perfectly from all the videos I had watched of you to real life. You were authentically you. A true badass! Rest now big guy. 👊🏼💪🏼💔

The first time I let my beard grow I made an appointment at Schorem with Miky. To be honest I was a little inspectie about my beard but I thought, who would give a better advice then a bearded giant like Miky. I asked him for advice and told him it was the first time I let grow my beard. Miky said “don’t worry, I let it grow for the first time also”. The way he said that, fucking droog as we Dutch call that, it still makes me laugh haha. The best haircuts I ever for where done by Miky. I always liked his robustness, his humor and his attitude. I’m going to miss the box he gave after a fucking fantastic haircut and beard trim. I didn’t knew Miky that good but fuck, What a shame that a great guy like him leaves us so early. Thank you Miky, you were inspiration! Rest in power
